15 Minutes for Cancer

"In the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes." (Warhol)

"How would you use your 15 minutes of fame?" (Lanoie)

We made it. Take a look at the pictures!

How it all began...

Andy Warhol Gordon March 25, 2004 once said something along the lines of: "In the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes." That got me thinking: what would you use your 15 minutes of fame for?

I've decided to use my 15 minutes to help fight cancer.

I'm not going to rant about the causes of cancer, the effects of it on families and friends, or the weight that it has on our society. I will leave that to others who do a much better job of sharing the information.

Instead, I want to raise awareness that research, education, and understanding are some of the positive ways people can deal with this disease.

So now I am thinking... how can one person help raise awareness? I mean, everyone can do their part to help by donating to the cause, but what can I do that will stand out?

Then I heard about 'Cops for Cancer', and thought: "Hey, I have a lot more hair than those guys, shaving my head would be a much bigger deal and it would raise some money that could go to a good cause."

I promptly considered giving that idea up, as it was way too much of a commitment for me. Let's face it: no one would notice me if I didn't have these locks. It's my claim to fame.

Fifteen Minutes for Cancer

April5_2004_022_sm.jpg So here we are... On Saturday, April 3, 2004 at 11:00 am, I shaved my head (bald!) trying to raise funds for cancer research and giving my hair to make wigs for cancer patients. I used my 15 minutes of fame to raise over $10,000 in donations to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Please help out and pass this Web page on to all of your family and friends, and have them contact the Canadian Cancer Society to donate.

Until later...

Gordon

Updates

James Barclay Aveda Spa and Salon is running a $500 gift certificate draw for people who go to the salon and make a donation to our fund raiser. The draw will be held the same day they shave my head. Their Web site has the details.

Investors Group

"The directors, consultants, associates, assistants and staffs at Investors Group Financial Services Inc. Winnipeg Downtown Office on 9 floor, 444 St. Mary Ave. Winnipeg will sponsor your charity event.
Regards,
Edward Vun"

With a surge of recent support, Lorne Yuffe (head shave) and Ainsley Henault (hair cut) from Investors Group will be shearing their hair with Gordon Lanoie (head shave) in support for 15 Minutes for Cancer.

Thirteen year old Ainsley is a cancer survivor and has been in remission since 1997. Lorne, who is 26, has had numerous tumors removed; however, at this point all have been benign.

Both survivors of their experiences, Ainsley and Lorne want to give back to a foundation that has given them support throughout their ordeals.

The head shave will be taking place at the 1639 Kenaston at 11 am on Saturday, April 3, 2004. Everyone is welcome to visit.

Monday, March 22, 2004: We were out selling Daffodils with the Canadian Cancer Society this morning. It was a little cold, but there were lots of volunteers and we were raising awareness and cash at the same time. James Barclay dropped off $740 that his salon has collected for the cause. James has brought in almost $1,000 to date. Bravo James: Thank you!

Rahim has been doing most of the photography that is used on this site. He will also be taking the final shots on Saturday.

InDaHood Design created the posters that you see in all the Magicuts locations around Winnipeg, promoting our fund raiser.

Magicuts will be donating $1 for every haircut in any of their Winnipeg locations on Saturday, April 3, to support 15 Minutes for Cancer.

Congratulations go out to Martin Hayward, Max Wehrle, Gary Beer, and Time Muron who this weeks raised over $6,000 in their own head shave event to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. Bravo!
