Overview
This section will introduce you to Photoshop's interface and workspace: its menus, panels, tools and preferences.

- (1) Workspace Overview
- This lecture describes the Photoshop interface and the general purpose of the Photoshop menus.
- (2) The Toolbox
- The Toolbox contains a number of tools you'll use to create and manipulate images. They are described briefly in this lecture.
- (3) Panel Basics
- Additional options for manipulating images are stored in panels. General descriptions of the most common Photoshop panels are provided.
- (4) Customizing the Workspace
- Panels are explored in greater depth in this lecture. There are many ways to customize the layout of the panels and you'll learn about the dock, panel icons, stacking panels, as well as saving, restoring and deleting workspaces.
- (5) General Preferences
- The rest of this module deals with preferences which contain settings that you can adjust to suit your own needs while working in Photoshop. General preferences set the overall preferences for the operation of the program.
- (6) Interface Preferences
- The Interface preferences give you options for the display and appearance of various parts of the Photoshop interface.
- (7) File Handling Preferences
- The File Handling preferences offer options for saving files, file compatibility, and lets you set the number of files that will appear in your recent file list.
- (8) Performance Preferences
- This lecture will discuss preferences that affect Photoshop's performance.
- (9) Cursors Preferences
- This set of preferences is used to control the general aspects of monitor display as well as the appearance of the cursors.
- (A) Transparency & Gamut
- These settings are used to determine how transparency is displayed in the document as well as the colour and tint used to show out-of-gamut colours in the image.
- (B) Units & Rulers Preferences
- These are used to specify the units used to express distances within the dialogs in Photoshop.
- (C) Guides, Grid & Slices Preferences Preferences
- This set of preferences sets the colour, style and spacing of the grid lines, as well as the colour and style of the guides.
- (D) Plug-Ins Preferences
- Plug-ins are extra features that extend Photoshop's capabilities that can be added and removed. The scratch disk provides a temporary storage area on the hard drive that is used when RAM is full. This set of preferences lets you set the drive location, among other things.
- (E) Type Preferences
- These settings determine how type (text) is used in Photoshop.
