File Saving Options
This section contains options for saving image previews and applying file extensions.
- Image Previews
- To save previews or thumbnails with your images select Always Save in the Image Previews drop-down menu. You will see these thumbnails when you open and single-click images stored in a directory using Photoshop's Open command and in other applications that support it. To save disk space, select Never Save. Select Ask When Saving if you want Photoshop to ask if you want a thumbnail created whenever you save an image. You may also enable saving the preview as a Macintosh and/or Windows thumbnail. The Mac version offers the option to save thumbnails as an icon or a full-sized low-resolution image.
- File Extension (Windows), Append File Extension (Mac)
- Windows. Select Use Lower Case to force Photoshop to save files with lower case file type extensions. Lower case extensions have become the de-facto standard and are recommended. Unix servers are case sensitive, so consistent character case (upper or lower) is important to maintain when using your images for the Web.
- Mac. Although file extensions aren't required on Macintosh systems, it's recommended that they be appended to file names so the files will be compatible on other operating systems. From the Append File Extension menu you can choose Never to save without file extensions, Always to append file extensions, or Ask When Saving to receive a prompt whenever you save a file. Enable the Use Lower Case checkbox to save file extensions as lower case; otherwise, they will be saved as upper case.
- Save As to Original Folder (CS5)
- When this option is enabled, using the File > Save As command will automatically save the file to the same folder it was opened from.
File Compatibility
These options allow you to select the level of backwards compatibility in the .psd file format or enable advanced file saving options in the TIFF file format like ZIP and JPEG compression.
- Camera Raw Preferences
- Clicking this button will open a dialog where you set camera raw preferences.
- Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for Supported Raw Files
- Enabling this option will enable camera raw files to be opened in the Adobe Camera Raw application rather than Photoshop.
- Ignore EXIF Profile Tag
- EXIF metadata is information embedded in an image taken with a digital camera such as the date and time the photo was taken, the image format, type of camera, shutter speed, f-stop, image dimensions, etc. With this option enabled Photoshop will not save this data with the image. It's advisable to leave this option unchecked, which it is by default.
- Ask Before Saving Layered TIFF Files
- TIFF files can be saved with or without layers. Saving a TIFF with layers allows you to edit it later like a regular Photoshop file but the file size may be substantially larger. This option, when enabled, will provide a prompt each time you save a layered TIFF file asking whether you want to save it with layers or flatten the image.
- Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility
- PSB files are images that can be of any file size. Enabling this setting will embed extra information in PSD and PSB files to make them compatible with older versions of Photoshop. If you'll never need to open your images in older Photoshop versions, disable this option to create smaller file sizes.
Other
- Recent Files List
