Photoshop
Saving Files
Overview
The next step in exploring Photoshop is to understand all of the options for saving files, both normally and specifically for the Web. Photoshop offers different saving commands that all save files, but in some cases in very different ways. We will review each of those methods and the options associated with each in this section.
Here is a summary of the topics in this module:
- (1) Saving Options Defined
- The Save and Save As commands are covered in this lecture as well as the image formats in which files can be saved.
- (2) Optimizing for the Web
- The Save for Web & Devices dialog is used to optimize images for display on the Web. This lecture covers the parts of the dialog that are common to all file types.
- (3) Viewing Images During Optimization
- In the Save for Web & Devices dialog you can view an image before and after optimizing. Various viewing options are covered in this lecture.
- (4) Optimizing JPEG Images
- A practice exercise will walk you through the steps for saving a JPEG file.
- (5) Optimizing PNG-24 Images
- The PNG-24 format is suitable for photographic or continuous tone images. PNG-24 supports up to 256 levels of transparency. A short exercise will show you how to save an image in this format.
- (6) Optimizing GIF and PNG-8 Images
- Both of these image formats support 256 colours and transparency. In an exercise you'll learn about the preset GIF and PNG-8 settings, setting transparency and mattes, dithering and more.
- (7) Colour Tables
- When GIF and PNG-8 images are optimized, a colour table (or palette) is generated for the image. There are colour reduction algorithms you can choose from that determine the type of colour table that will be generated. The different options are discussed.
