Selections

Overview

A key to manipulating images is the ability to isolate an area so that you can edit that part without affecting the rest of the image. Selections are one way of accomplishing this. The various selections tools are covered in this section along with exercises in which you can practice making selections.

Here is a summary of the topics in this module:

(1) Marquee Tool
This tool lets you define a selection area in shapes such as rectangles, circles, or one-pixel wide strips.
(2) Lasso Tool
This tool has several options for making freehand selections.
(3) Magic Wand Tool
The Magic Wand tool defines selections relative to the colour of the pixel(s) that you click on with the tool.
(4) The Pen Tool
The Pen tool lets you create vector-based paths in an image.
(5) Creating a Selection from a Path
Once you've defined a path using the Pen tool, you can convert it to a selection.
(6) Colour Range
The Colour Range selection allows you to identify a single colour (and/or variations) and make a selection based on that colour.
(7) Manipulating Selections
This lecture describes how to modify and move selections.
