DIT Aboriginal Information Communications and Technology
Description
The Aboriginal Information Communications & Technology Diploma (AICTD) program will prepare individuals of Métis, First Nation, or Inuit descent to be successful in pursuing entry level positions within the Information Technology sector. The program combines solid technical skills with the highly sought after business skills required to be a key member of any team. The combination of both parts will make for a highly skilled and valuable individual ready to contribute on many facets and levels of an organization's needs.
Objectives
- Graduates will be equipped for the workforce with a transferable skill set that will open up opportunities in a variety of fields including help desk support, junior programmer, junior web programmer and junior network support technician.
Required Courses
- One Month Work Experience
- The Aboriginal Information Communications & Technology Diploma is comprised of 1078 hours of study. Students are required to complete all courses in the program to meet graduation requirements. The program also has a four week work placement for those that are successful in the courses.
- DIT 15531 Internet Systems Specialist Diploma: Networking Fundamentals
- This course will introduce students to networking theory. Students will become familiar with networking concepts, introductory topologies, common protocols, cabling types, wide-area network (WAN) technologies, and OSI layers.
- DIT 15532 Aboriginal Information Communications and Technology Diploma: Intermediate Networking
- This course will provide understanding of standard protocols used in local and wide-area networks. Students will become familiar with NOS topologies, IP basics, topology benefits, and applications.
- DIT 15533 Aboriginal Information Communications and Technology Diploma: Networking Protocols
- This course will explore technologies and topologies affecting Internet routing, networking management, efficient use of Domain Name Service (DNS), IP addressing, and subnets and masks. Students will become familiar with TCP/IP protocol stack, IP routing, subnets and masks, DNS, and IP addressing schemes.
- DIT 15534 Aboriginal Information Communications and Technology Diploma: Advanced Networking
- This course will provide increased control over networks with advanced networking theory. Students will become familiar with switches and bridges, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), and Virtual LANs (VLANs).
- DIT 16247 Aboriginal Information Communications and Technology Diploma: MSO
- Microsoft Office Skills is designed for students who are requiring knowledge in electronic communication tools, word processing software, spreadsheet software, and database software. Work at your own pace and on your own schedule with testing available online 24/7. Students will become familiar with using email, the Internet, the Microsoft Windows Operating System, Microsoft Word 2003, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
- DIT 15538 Aboriginal Information Communications and Technology Diploma: Windows Administration
- This course will provide a technical introduction to the Windows Server, knowledge about installation, configuration, and user and group management, auditing resources, administering printers, systems architecture, installation, disk and file systems, and local security policies. Students will become familiar with Internet Information Server (IIS), Web FTP, Certificate Services, VPN connectivity, internetworking, remote routing and access, standard DNS set-up, and DHCP Management.
- DIT 16008 Aboriginal Information Communications and Technology: Intro to Linux

The Introduction to Linux course consists of 40 hours of hands-on practice with some theory. The student will be given a virtual machine of a Linux operating system to be used for the duration of the class. Other courses will require students to create, upload, and edit files on this virtual machine and other Unix systems over SSH or other remote connection. This course will introduce the student to the basics required to perform these tasks. A majority of the course will be done at the command line interface but a graphical user interface will be used where appropriate. Installation, configuration, and administration of Unix/Linux is beyond the scope of this introductory course.

- DPS 15119 Aboriginal Information Communications and Technology Diploma: Effective Written Communications
- This course will help students develop strategies for writing clearly, concisely and efficiently with ease and confidence. Students will be able to impact the reader with a clear, concise, organized and professional message.
- DPS 15117 Aboriginal Information Communications and Technology Diploma: Effective Oral Communications
- This course will enhance oral communication skills. Students will be able to make clear, accessible and compelling speeches and presentations, lead/facilitate meetings and problem-solving sessions efficiently and effectively, and resolve interpersonal conflicts proactively.

The data modeling and database design course introduces students to databases and the theory behind a well designed system of data. Students are introduced to the basic concepts of databases, normalization, relationships, as well as standard ways of diagramming their data models. This course is designed to be conceptual in nature, giving students a solid foundation in preparation for the more hands-on courses later in the program.
