Accessibility
Lanoie.com tries to encourage Web managers to create content that is as accessible as possible for their target audience. There are a number of steps that we have taken for this purpose.
- The pages are designed without using tables for layout.
- Fixed layout designs may 'break' and be unusable if someone with poor eye sight increases the size of the display font. With a properly tested, flexible layout, the text size may be enlarged as needed with no loss of useability. Also, the extra download and rendering time for complex layout tables can greatly slow pages down. These pages use Cascading Style Sheets to control the layout.
- Access keys
- We have incorporated keyboard shortcuts in many areas of our site. For example, if you are in the Glossary, you can jump to any page by pressing the Access key letter for where you want to go. More details on how Access keys work can be found here.
- Larger Leading
- The line height of the text has been increased from the browser default to improve readability. The slightly larger space between the lines should be available with any fully CSS aware user agent.
- Fixed Line Length
- Studies have shown that too many words on a line will slow the reading speed down. Some of the CSS themes this site uses will control the width of the page to allow for a fixed line length to facilitate easier reading. Other themes may use the full width of the browser window if the end user decides they like that theme better.
- Easy Contrast
- Reading off of a monitor can be difficult. The hash glare hinders the ability to read for long periods of time. In addition, most pages that use black content on a white background have such high contrast that people develop eye fatigue. This site uses a softer contrast colour scheme to reduce potential eye strain.
